Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities The network engineer develops comprehensive network architecture plans for various enterprise network segments to include; high availability datacenter networks, multi-platform Wide Area Networks, domestic and international remote office networks, secure control networks that adhere to corporate and regulatory compliance requirements. Network architecture plans include network design and implementation plans, cost and resource estimates, change management adherence, and coordination with cross-functional teams. These efforts support enterprise class corporate IT services such as Internet and corporate application hosting, customer service and support, support of electric and gas utility generation, transmission, and delivery operations. The network engineer monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots network infrastructure as required. Serves as technical resource to fellow network engineers and provide assistance to IT management staff as required. Typical Duties Designs and develops complex data network plans for enterprise network upgrades and expansions. Designs and implements complex data systems, network configurations and network architecture, including hardware and software technology, site locations, business continuity, disaster recovery, and integration of technologies. Provides network engineering expert resources in the disciplines of core routing, core switching, network security, network diagnostics and application load balancing. Assesses and resolves the most complex data network problems and incidents. Reviews analyses and technical feasibility to develop data network deployment strategies. Assesses and reviews data network growth forecasts to ensure that business needs are translated into network capacity requirements. Leads and supports efforts to resolve data network problems and incidents through root cause analysis and study of potential network deficits. Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science or related technical field or equivalent work experience. The network engineer 2 position requires three years of experience with data network technologies and protocols. The network engineer 3 position requires five years of experience with data network technologies and protocols. Technical skills including software maintenance, configuration, installation, and maintenance of enterprise class network routers, switches, firewalls, and/or application load balancers. Advanced level analysis and design skills involving the ability to gather data on systems issues, define alternative approaches, assess business impact, recommend cost effective solutions, and develop and implement those solutions. Advanced knowledge of current technologies, tools, applications, and vendors. Professional Cisco certification or ability demonstrate equivalent knowledge. Demonstrate expert proficiency in two of the following core disciplines and a balance of advanced skills and knowledge in the remaining disciplines: -Core routing - routing protocols and route redistribution using OSPF, BGP, EIGRP and RIP, other network technologies including GRE, DMVPN, MPLS, VRFs, IPv6 and NAT. -Core switching large scale campus switching using EtherChannel, Spanning-Tree Protocol, VLANs, stacking, and first hop redundancy protocols. Enterprise class data center switching and fabrics using 10/40/100 Gig, EtherChannel, Virtual Device Contexts, and Virtual Port-Channels. -Network security - Palo Alto firewall and Panorama experience, DMZ design experience, network ACLs and filtering, network based authentication utilizing Dot1X and Radius, Web Proxy and URL filtering. -Network diagnostics experience with common network monitoring tools, packet/protocol analysis tools, Netflow, and other performance analysis tools. -Application Load-Balancing - experience with physical and virtual Application Delivery Controller technologies, load-balancing design and key fundamentals such as; methods of load-balancing, options and features, Virtual IP Addressing, Resource Pools and Health Monitoring rules for high availability applications, SSL Off-loading, SNAT, and design and creation of application specific load-balancing rules. -Miscellaneous Quality of Service, design and support of VPN technologies to include remote access and IPSEC tunnels, Multicast and Multicast routing, design and support of enterprise class WiFi infrastructure. Advanced knowledge of utility energy management and industrial control networks desirable. Effective oral and written communication skills. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
