5 South is a 42-bed acute medical/surgical observation unit that accepts inpatients and remotely monitored telemetry patients. 5 South has 20 semi-private rooms and 2 private rooms with negative airflow capabilities. Patients accepted to 5 South are from all areas of the hospital, including The generally from the Emergency Department and PACU.
5 South also accepts medical-surgical and remote telemetry inpatients admitted with the diagnosis of, but not limited to: pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cellulitis, deep vein thrombosis, sepsis, infectious disease, various gastrointestinal disorders, renal failure and general surgery.
Generally patients admitted to the observation unit are projected to have a stay of 24 hours or less, no more than 48 hours, and therefore are considered outpatients and/or an extension of the Emergency Department. Patients in observation status need further diagnostic testing and/or further observation and assessments.

What You Need to Be Successful:
Graduation from an accredited nursing education program approved by the Board of Nursing or found by the Board to be substantially equivalent to the programs in Maryland
Currently licensed as an RN in the state of Maryland
BLS certification required
Successful completion of a refresher course within past 6 months if nursing practice has not occurred within the past 5 years
1-2 years of Telemetry RN with dysrhythmia interpretation experience preferred
1-2 years of Critical Care, ICU, ED or any fast-paced unit or high acuity experience a plus
ACLS preferred, but dysrhythmia training will be provided during orientation
